Reopening the airport ‘will hurt the environment’

Reopening the airport 'will hurt the environment'

Climate experts have raised concerns that the reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport could harm the environment, prompting questions about the appropriateness of utilising public funds for this initiative.

A report from the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures, in partnership with the University of Sheffield, has concluded that the site’s reopening cannot be justified amid a “climate crisis.”

This week, it was disclosed that the project will require over £100 million in public funds due to Doncaster Council’s inability to attract essential private sector investment.

Oliver Coppard, the Mayor of South Yorkshire, expressed his dedication to safeguarding the interests of the region’s taxpayers.

Richard Sulley, a senior research fellow at the Grantham Centre, emphasised the importance of transparency in public investment. He stated, “When we are looking at investing public money, we really need to see what else we could be doing with it.” Is this the most prudent use of a substantial public investment?

The Committee on Climate Change, an independent advisory body to the government, has stated that further airport expansion should be halted until a system is established to regulate the volume of flights departing from the UK.

The authorities emphasise that the focus will be on developing sustainable aviation. However, the necessary technologies are not yet available, indicating that there will be a transitional phase during which aviation fuel will continue to be consumed.

Aviation significantly impacts the environment in a manner that is not proportionate to its scale. The environmental impact of aviation extends beyond carbon emissions; it also encompasses the contrails and nitrous oxide produced by aircraft during flight, contributing significantly to ecological harm.

In 2019, Doncaster Council officially declared a climate emergency, with Coppard asserting that regional politicians regard climate change seriously.

South Yorkshire boasts the largest share of clean-tech jobs in the nation, positioning the region as a key player in the future of sustainable aviation. The sustainable flying emphasis highlights South Yorkshire’s potential to contribute significantly to this evolving industry.

South Yorkshire is positioned to take a leading role in the revolution of sustainable aviation, with the University of Sheffield at the helm, setting a national and potentially international standard.

“South Yorkshire is poised to become a hub for emerging industries, with plans to position the airport as a central player in this growth. The aim is to bolster the economy while ensuring sustainable air travel in the future.”

Ed Miliband, the Member of Parliament for Doncaster North, currently holds the position of Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.

The department has indicated that the airport’s reopening primarily concerns commercial interests and local authorities.
