Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami colleague Jordi Alba have faced suspension following their absence from Major League Soccer’s All-Star Game earlier this week, as confirmed by the league on Friday.
In a recent announcement, MLS confirmed that both Messi and Alba will miss the upcoming showdown against FC Cincinnati, citing their absence from this week’s All-Star event as the reason.
The league issued a concise statement, clarifying that any player absent from the All-Star Game without prior authorisation will be barred from participating in their team’s subsequent match.
In an exciting matchup set for Wednesday, Messi and Alba have been selected to represent a combined MLS squad, taking on a formidable team from Mexico’s Liga MX during the league’s All-Star festivities.
In a surprising turn of events, both players withdrew from the highly anticipated showpiece early Wednesday, leaving fans and analysts alike to speculate about the undisclosed reasons behind their withdrawals.
The last-minute exclusion has put both Messi and Alba in a precarious position, potentially facing disciplinary action. According to the regulations set forth by the MLS, athletes chosen for the All-Star game are required to participate unless they present a legitimate excuse, such as an injury, that prevents their participation.
In a press conference on Friday, MLS commissioner Don Garber revealed that the league faced an unavoidable decision to suspend players from participating this weekend, labelling the ruling as a “very difficult decision”.
“It’s clear that Lionel Messi has a deep affection for this league,” Garber stated. “It’s hard to argue that any player, or even individual, has had a greater impact on Major League Soccer than Messi.” His unwavering commitment to Inter Miami is truly commendable, and I have great respect for his decision.
“Regrettably, we must adhere to our established policy concerning participation in the All-Star Game, and enforcement was necessary.” The decision was undoubtedly a challenging one.
Garber, however, indicated that MLS plans to reassess its current policy moving forward.
“We will thoroughly evaluate the policy as we progress,” he stated. “I am dedicated to collaborating with our athletes to assess the future direction of the rule.”
Messi is reportedly feeling quite frustrated.
In a fiery conference call with reporters on Friday, Inter Miami’s billionaire co-owner Jorge Mas didn’t hold back in his criticism of the league’s decision to suspend Messi and Alba. He revealed that Messi is “very upset” about the ruling, highlighting the emotional impact of the situation on the star player.
“Leo Messi is clearly feeling frustrated.” “I hope it doesn’t have a long-term impact,” stated Mas, who is actively engaged in discussions with Messi regarding a potential extension to his existing contract, set to expire at the end of this year.
“Could this influence how Messi views the league and its regulations?” “There’s no question about it,” Mas added. “Lionel stands apart from the rest.” He aims to compete in high-stakes matches.
In a statement made on Wednesday, Garber acknowledged that the league should have been more aware of the no-show situation, while also showing some understanding for the demanding schedule that Messi has been navigating in recent weeks.
The 38-year-old Argentinian superstar has showcased his endurance by participating in nine matches over 35 days, completing the full 90 minutes in each encounter, including four crucial fixtures in the FIFA Club World Cup.
“Miami’s schedule stands out as truly unique compared to any other team,” Garber stated. “A significant 10-day hiatus was observed for the majority of our teams.” Miami has yet to make its mark. The league must navigate through that challenge.
Messi and Alba’s involvement in the match was shrouded in uncertainty after Miami coach Javier Mascherano expressed his preference for the pair to skip All-Star responsibilities last weekend.
The roster has been finalised, and the players are officially summoned. “I would prefer they take a break, but ultimately, the decision isn’t mine,” Mascherano stated.
