Farewell to Bollywood legend Dharmendra

Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, a cherished and enduring figure in Indian cinema, died today, Monday, at his residence in Mumbai at the age of 89. Filmmaker Karan Johar verified the passing in a poignant social media announcement.

A formal statement from Dharmendra’s family is pending. The announcement comes mere weeks before his 90th birthday on December 8.

“It marks the conclusion of an era… a colossal megastar… the epitome of a hero in mainstream cinema… exceptionally handsome and possessing an enigmatic screen presence… he is and will eternally remain a bona fide legend of Indian cinema… defining and profoundly embedded in the annals of cinematic history… yet, above all, he was an exemplary human being… universally adored by all in our industry…,” Karan’s Instagram post stated.

He possessed profound love and positivity for all… his blessings, embrace, and remarkable warmth would be lost beyond verbal expression… Today, a significant void exists in our industry—an absence that no one can fill. There will always be the singular DHARAMJI. We hold you in high regard, esteemed Sir. Your absence will be profoundly felt. The skies are fortunate today. It will eternally be my privilege to have collaborated with you. “And my heart expresses with respect, reverence, and affection, ‘Do not depart yet, for my heart is not yet full,'” he stated.

The ‘He Man’ of Indian Cinema had been in poor health for some time. On 10 November, Dharmendra was hospitalised at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to a decline in his health.

Numerous notable figures in cinema, such as Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Govinda, visited the hospital to offer their support to the Deol family during this challenging period.

Two days later, Dharmendra was released from the hospital as the family chose home therapy.

Dharmendra was released from the hospital at 7:30 AM today, November 12. His family is providing care for him at their home. Pray for the continuation of his treatment, management, and recovery,” stated Pratik Samdani to ANI.

Dharmendra is survived by his first wife, Prakash Kaur; his second wife, actress Hema Malini; and six children: sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, and daughters Vijeta and

Ajeita from his first marriage, along with daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol from his second marriage.

Revered as the ‘He-Man’ of Indian Cinema, Dharmendra featured in numerous legendary films, including Sholay, Dharamveer, Chupke Chupke, Loafer, Jugnu, and Seeta Aur Geeta.

He was last observed in ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’ in 2024. In the film, he portrayed Shahid Kapoor’s grandfather.

In 2023, before this film, he astonished audiences with his exceptional performance in Karan Johar’s directorial ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.’ He effortlessly revived the romantic ambience for which he was renowned.

Recall ‘Ayee Milan Ki Bela’, ‘Anupama’, ‘Aas Paas’, ‘Pyar Hi Pyar’, ‘Blackmail’, ‘Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka’, ‘Mere Humdum Mere Dost’, ‘Jeevan Mrityu’, and ‘Aap Ki Parchhaiyan’? In each of these classics, he personified the archetypal lover with unparalleled elegance. Decades later, that same allure persisted in captivating younger viewers with ‘Life in a… Metro’ and, more recently, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’.

His film ‘Ikkis,’ directed by Sriram Raghavan, is scheduled for release next month in December. Although he has departed for his eternal resting place, he will continue to elicit joy among his admirers through his indelible film legacy.

At 89, Dharmendra continued to work diligently, inspiring generations through his artistry and commitment to discipline and a healthy lifestyle.

He was a fervent Instagram user who frequently shared glimpses of his fitness regimen with his followers.

Dharmendra sustained a diverse fan following spanning all age groups. His lasting charisma spanned generations, and with his demise, he bequeaths a legacy esteemed by admirers, colleagues, and the nation as a whole.
