The UK may experience its hottest day of 2025 as the heat wave persists

Parts of England are experiencing a significant rise in temperatures, with forecasts suggesting that the south could see highs of 34C or 35C.

Tuesday is poised to potentially set a new record as the hottest day of the year, surpassing the 33.2 °C mark that was recorded in Surrey just ten days prior.

The Midlands is expected to experience above-average temperatures, in sharp contrast to the rest of the UK, where cooler and cloudier conditions are predicted to prevail.

High temperatures persist across Europe, as France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, and the Balkans have all been subjected to intense heat in recent days.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced an extension of amber heat health alerts for a significant portion of England, now lasting into Wednesday morning.  The regions included in the coverage are Yorkshire and the Humber, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, and both southern areas of England.

Warnings suggest that public services, including hospitals and transport, may face significant disruptions.  In light of the rising temperatures, the London Ambulance Service has issued a call for the public to exercise additional caution in managing the heat.

A yellow heat health alert has been issued for North West England, indicating a less severe level of concern regarding high temperatures.

Despite minimal heat-related disruptions to date, firefighters in the Scottish Highlands and the adjacent Moray region are battling moorland wildfires for the fourth consecutive day.

Following a scorching conclusion to June, Tuesday’s temperatures are noteworthy, as London Heathrow registered a high of 33.1 °C on Monday.

Across numerous regions of the country, the night brought unseasonably warm temperatures, lingering in the mid to high teens.

Some regions of East Anglia and south-east England are expected to experience what is known as a “tropical night,” characterised by temperatures that remain above 20 °C throughout the night.

On Tuesday night, temperatures are expected to provide a more comfortable sleeping environment for most regions, except the south-east, where warm conditions are likely to persist throughout the night.

By Wednesday, the heat wave affecting the UK is expected to come to an end, with temperatures in the south-east dropping to the mid-20s, aligning more closely with the averages typically seen at the start of July.

Heavy showers are expected to impact the far south-east of England, north-east England, and eastern Scotland.

Wimbledon is set to embrace a much-needed break following an unprecedentedly sweltering start to the tennis tournament, where players have been spotted using ice bags on their heads to combat the heat.

The United Kingdom is currently experiencing its second heat wave of 2025.

A heat wave is officially declared when specific locations experience temperatures at or above a designated threshold for three consecutive days.  Across various regions of the country, the temperature thresholds fluctuate between 25°C and 28°C.

The current heat wave can be attributed to a significant high-pressure system that has settled over Europe, often referred to as a “heat dome.” This phenomenon is contributing to the rising frequency of high temperatures in the UK.

Experts have highlighted the impact of climate change on the increasingly intense summers, warning that heat waves are expected to grow both more frequent and more severe in the years to come.
