Cyclone Fengal has resulted in the deaths of at least 19 individuals across India and Sri Lanka, leading to significant flooding in Tamil Nadu state and the Puducherry region. The cyclone landed on Saturday after traversing India’s southern coast from the Bay of Bengal.
On Sunday, India’s weather office reported that Puducherry experienced its most significant rainfall in 24 hours in three decades.
Parts of the southern city of Chennai were left inundated following the cyclone. On Saturday, flights from the city were temporarily halted; however, India’s airport authority announced that operations had resumed by early Sunday morning.
Local media captured dramatic visuals of gusty winds and heavy rainfall, revealing submerged roads and the use of boats for rescue operations.
In Puducherry, the Indian army has been actively conducting relief operations for those affected by the storm as rainfall subsides in Chennai.
Recent reports from the Disaster Management Centre in Colombo indicate that heavy rains in Sri Lanka have resulted in the deaths of 16 individuals and have impacted a total of 138,944 families.
