'The sadness is great', Messi said of World Cup loss

Lionel Messi stated on Monday that following Argentina’s defeat in the World Cup final, “the anguish is profound, and it will require considerable time for this injury to mend. I will cherish all the positive memories,” Messi expressed in Spanish on Instagram, accompanied by an image of himself donning his runner-up medal after the world champions’ defeat to Spain in extra time. Currently, it is challenging to recognise our accomplishments; however, this team has reached two successive World Cup finals.

The 39-year-old, who wept following the loss, remarked, “I would also like to extend my congratulations to Spain for their championship victory.

During the knockout stages, Argentina overcame deficits to triumph over Egypt and England and needed extra time to secure victories against Cape Verde and Switzerland. Through our unwavering dedication in pivotal matches that will be etched in our memories eternally, and bolstered by the backing of a nation, alongside the relentless toil of this team, we have once again positioned ourselves among the elite globally,” the Inter Miami forward articulated in the post.

Despite netting eight goals throughout the tournament, Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient, was ineffective in the final, mirroring his team’s inability to challenge a more strategically adept Spanish squad.

He has now experienced two defeats in World Cup finals, in 2014 and 2026, and secured one victory in 2022 against France.

Argentinian news outlets said on Monday that Messi was unlikely to return to Buenos Aires with the majority of the team for what is anticipated to be a muted homecoming.
