Tamim Iqbal suffers heart attack during DPL match

Former Bangladesh one-day international cricket captain Tamim Iqbal has been hospitalised following a heart attack he experienced on the field during a domestic match.

On Monday, Tamim, 36, took the helm of Mohammedan Sporting Club during a match in the 50-over Dhaka Premier League (DPL).

He took part in the toss but subsequently reported experiencing chest pain. Following preliminary care administered on-site, he was transferred to a local hospital for further treatment. “He experienced a heart attack.”
“What I know so far is that his heart started to function better,” stated Debashis Chowdhury, a medical officer with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), in an interview with the AFP news agency.

Tariqul Islam, a team official, informed AFP that Tamim is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka. He called on the public to pray for his swift recovery.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has cancelled its planned board meeting due to Tamim’s unexpected illness, prompting several board members to visit him at the hospital.

Tamim played for Bangladesh in 391 matches across various formats from 2007 to 2023.

With over 15,000 international runs, he is the sole Bangladeshi batsman to have achieved centuries across all three game formats.
