The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reports that the monsoon is anticipated to strengthen throughout Bangladesh this week, resulting in extensive rainfall and temporary relief from the heat in various regions.
Today signifies the commencement of Ashar, the third month in the Bengali calendar, heralding the traditional onset of the monsoon season.
The BMD’s weather forecast for the upcoming five days indicates that the monsoon system is intensifying. A trough of low pressure is reported to extend from West Bengal to the northwest Bay, affecting the southwestern region of the country.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported that the monsoon is currently “fairly active” across the country, while conditions are described as “moderate” over the North Bay.
Many areas across Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions are expected to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers, which may be accompanied by lightning and temporary gusty winds.
Several regions within the Rajshahi division are expected to see some rainfall.
Isolated locations across the country may experience moderately heavy to hefty rainfall.
In a striking contrast, certain regions of the country are enduring a persistent heat wave, even as rainfall persists in other areas.
A moderate heatwave is currently affecting Dinajpur and Nilphamari, while a milder heat persists in the Khulna division, other areas of Rangpur, and the districts of Rajshahi, Pabna, Feni, and Patuakhali.
The BMD predicts a potential easing of the heat wave in certain regions.
Daytime temperatures are projected to decrease by 1°C to 2°C, with nighttime temperatures also anticipated to experience a slight decline.
Rain activity is expected to increase in intensity over the next few days, as forecasts indicate that the majority of the country will experience rainfall throughout the week.
Significant rainfall has been reported in various regions, with parts of Sylhet and Chattogram experiencing over 88mm. Notably, Tetulia recorded 112mm, while Maijdee Court in Noakhali saw 115mm.
The BMD has issued a warning urging the public to exercise caution amid heavy rainfall and strong winds, especially in regions susceptible to flooding and landslides.
