Lady Gaga has released a new single titled “The Dead Dance,” featuring a music video directed by Tim Burton. The video showcases a unique blend of the macabre and playful elements, characteristic of Burton’s distinctive style. The release aligns with her guest appearance in the second season of Netflix’s “Wednesday”, which debuted yesterday.
The video begins with Gaga sitting on a wall, encircled by unsettling baby dolls. With the track beginning to play, she initiates her “dead dance,” awakening the dolls from their slumber. As the performance unfolds, masked backup dancers emerge, synchronising their movements with the rhythm, while the dolls rhythmically nod in time as daylight fades into darkness. The costume design for the project is led by Oscar-winner Colleen Atwood, while Parris Goebel and Corey Baker craft choreography. Additionally, Lady Gaga takes on a producing role alongside Michael Polansky, Burton, and Natalie Testa.
“The Dead Dance” is featured on the newly released extended edition of Gaga’s album “Mayhem,” which is now accessible on streaming platforms. This edition also includes two new tracks, “Can’t Stop the High” and “Kill for Love.” In July, rumours began to circulate regarding the video as Gaga was seen filming alongside Burton at the eerie Island of the Dolls in Mexico City. During the Graveyard Gala hosted by Spotify and Netflix for “Wednesday” last week, she officially announced the release of her single and her appearance on the show.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my experience working on ‘Wednesday’ season two, even in a minor role,” Gaga shared with her fans. “Collaborating with Tim Burton, Jenna, and the entire team has been an extraordinary experience.” Thank you for your attention. The release of my song ‘The Dead Dance’ is officially confirmed.
The song, crafted in collaboration with Andrew Watt and Cirkut, was composed explicitly for “Wednesday,” as confirmed by the show’s music supervisors. The dance sequence, which has since become iconic, was initially recorded with a temporary track matching its tempo. This footage remained confidential for more than a year, until the release of Gaga’s song brought it to light.
Music supervisor Jen Malone clarified to Tudum, “It’s not ‘Bloody Mary,’ and it’s not a remix.” A new song by Gaga has just been released. She stands as an icon, a rare talent in the music industry—and this aligns perfectly with the desires of her fans.
The latest announcement marks a new development in Gaga’s “Mayhem Ball” tour, which commenced in July at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. She is scheduled to take the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday, ahead of the tour’s continuation throughout North America and internationally.
